Named for Sherm's daughter and located just east of the Salinas River, Bella Luna's five acre estate has some very unique attributes. Influenced by the cool breezes coming from the famous Templeton Gap and pouring out into the river bottom, we have the advantage of receiving the cool moist evening breezes. We're proud to have one of the only dry-farmed, head trained Sangiovese vineyards in California.

Our Terrior structure is unique. The Estate has four different types of soil.  We have the "Rock Pile" comprised of alluvial river bottom.  There are lots of rocks in this section of the vineyard.  This is where we get our most intense fruit.

Second, we have clay loam.  Since we dry farm, this is where the moisture stays the longest yielding our largest crop. Next, we have sandy loam, the experts saying this is some of the best type of soil for grapes. Its up on the southeast hill. Our Cabernet seem to love it up there.

Lastly, we have just plain old loamy soil. Its down in the bottom so Cabs do good there because of late frost potential. Our vineyard is farmed organically and the only water the vines get come from "mother nature". The Sangiovese and one half of the Cabernet vines are head trained. The other half of the Cabernet vines are vertical cordon trained  - No trellises. Each of these vines are like our children. We always appraise vine vigor to determine fruit load and prune accordingly.
